I am proud to announce that i am the first, yet again, to post for this blog. Although, i have not read the farewell address and i will repost tomorrow with my opinions about this discussion. For now, i am going to bed. I know you all will be looking forward to my thoughts and feelings... especially Mr. Waddell who is probably sitting on the edge of his seat wishing I will post with more soon.
Washington's farewell address differs greatly with the government we have today. Washington believed strongly in a collective of states acting under one title of government, with each state having a lot of freedom and independence. Today, the lines between state and federal government are becoming more and more blurred, which I believe will eventually lead to a sluggish and innefective type of government. George Washington also believed in leaders being chosen on their political values, rather than deciding between the lesser of two evils, which is exactly what presidential elections are in this day and age. Washington was a firm believer of nuetrality, which is completely forgotten in modern America.
I think Washington's farewell address would hold up today. He breaks the bond between him and the people but supports the good intentions of the people to unify the government. Washington also talks about problems between the North and the South working out and how they aid eachother. Although you may think this can only be applied during Washington's time you're wrong! This speech is probally the basis for every presidents speech. He talks about current issues and unifing the people. These are key essential to modern day ideas.

Washington's speech applies today because he talks about modern issues that are important as of today. It holds up because Washington talks about the uniting of the American society and how the people should not be divided. Today people are divided into Democrats and Republicans, back then it was the Republicans and the federalists. Washington wanted us as the american people today to be able to unite and put our differences aside. That is what he envisoned for america.

I have to agree with TJ P. his comment on how George Washington wanted the north and south to work together is right. I believe that there is still some discrimnation against the north and the south. Washington wanted america to be united as one
Reading Washington's Farewell Address showed me that he had a pretty basic idea of America and keeping it from becoming overrun by the Europeans. He envisioned that the North, South, East and West sides of America should be united. He stated that one way or another, they could help each other out. As well, he urged that America should not favor other nations for it will lead other nations to become jealous and could possibly cause war. He did not want any part of America to have a foreign influence, meaning no alliances. This focused particularly on France and Britain. However, the Federalist wanted to collaborate with the British while the Republicans wanted a Treaty of Alliance with France. What Washington wrote on his farewell address was very general and can be applied today. When George Washington stated that favoring other nations should not be done, he was right. Favoring other nations allow their enemies to hate us which could create trouble and war. As well, when he stated that the North, South, East, and West would work better when united, he was right. When we work as one we all benefit each other and have the uttermost respect towards our nation.
I didn't read the whole thing yet just the first half. I wrote about the part he talks about liberty.-----------------------------------
Washington was a very honest and vibrant man. It is hard to find someone with true morals and a pure righteousness that radiates from his very name. And although he wanted to retire, he could turn away from his country. He talks about Liberty and our praise to its gift. And how important this gift is.
I believe Americans takes Liberty for granted. His virtues are still strong along with the heart of nation. We are only in a fog. I believe we will manage to uphold Washington's beliefs. As long as Americans keep fighting for what they believe and what they believe is right.
I think that what washington invisioned still is valid today. He believed so strongly in what he said and was so involved with the creation of our country. These are what made him such a special president. He envisioned a country totally united. Now we are just that. What he believed is still very valid today and will still be valid for years to come
It seems to me that Washington fully and completely understood the responsibilities of presidency and he talks as if it is something one should not have to go through. He led the country for a good 8 years but was elected almost reluctantly. It seems almost as if he doesn't want America to have another president but that there is nothing he could do about it. I think he was very worried about the eventual evolution of a kingship.
Washington outlined exactly what America should be. He told us to stay clear of alliances, to stay away from political parties, and also to unite as a nation. I believe that his speech is very true about what the U.S. should be like. Political parties are necessary but they do create hatred towards others with opposing ideas. Also every part of the nation could help each other in some way. Without alliances we would not have to be involved in any foreign affairs, even though we would not survive without permanent alliance. I believe we should take his speech to heart.

Nick y is correct. WE must try to unite our country even though we have two conflicting poltical parties. I believe that Washington wanted us to also help all nations and not favoritize one over the other because that will just create even more dilemna
I think that Washington's farewell speech would hold up today. That is because in a way Washington's speech was what he wanted America to become once the new president took office. Alson Washington says that he wants all the states to have their own freedom but at the sametime be run under the same government. Also Washington said that the one government that America is run under would help reunite everyone who lives in America. How what Washington wrote be appied today is that I think that Washington's farewell speech could be the basic speech that most presidents could go off of if they are trying to find an idea for their own speech.
I agree with Connor O. how today the line between the federal government and state is becoming more and more burred. Its as if that federal and state government are just one government. I also agree with Nick Y. on how we must try to unite the U.S. even thought there are two politcal parties out there.
Alex A. Per. 5
In Washington's address, he talks about unity throughout the nation: North, South, East, and West. Today this is being upheld, because we are all still together as a whole. The only difference today compared to 1796 is that there are more political parties today and there are many factions that have America separated. George Washington called for unity for all American citizens whether you be one political party or the other. Today we argue over things, like our economy, oil, and the environment. When doing so we can find ourselves hating the other guy which is the direct opposite of what Washington wanted for our nation. Back in the day, people who disagreed just sat down and talked without hatred or violence and debated, respectfully, each others views until a compromise was found. Today there are extremists that threaten other people for not believing in what they believe in and corrupt government officials. Washington would hate to see America like this were every other day, there is a man in Washington D.C. getting in trouble for adultery or money laundering. I think that we can all look at George Washington's thoughts and learn about what our first great leader wanted for America.
Alex A. Per. 5
I agree with what Sam and Nick are saying about unifying the political parties. Today Liberals and Conservatives fight and argue about everything, but agree on almost nothing. Obviously one of the parties are correct, I wont get into that now, but there are some things from both parties that can be used to compromise. Back in the day when we were figuring out our Branches of Government, we all had different ideas. There was the Virginia Plan and the New Jersey Plan. Both had very different ideas about representation of the states. In the end both parties worked together in finding a plan that benefited all, not just one party. I think that, especially now, in this time of hard times on Wall Street, bank foreclosures, business foreclosures, and troubles in our economy, we could use that old fashion gumption to pull the two parties together and figure out methods to benefit all people so that everyone is satisfied.
like it has been said above washington wanted us to be united but not to the point where the states lost there idenitity. He also wanted everyone to step back and try to look at stuff from a neutral point of view. Washington was in my opinion the best president becuase he says himself that he did not want to be president but he felt it was his duty to do it he didnt do it for himself like all presidents in the last 70 years
Washington estimated that individual happiness is coming from the union of the country and the capacity of having a democratic government to represent the citizens as it should be .
Today this issue is still discussed people are still trying to fight, racism and hatred that divide our nation .
Washington talked also about the relationship between federal and states governments and how to make them work, efficiently, which seems to be hard to accomplish today .
Georges Washington envisioned that if we had allies will have bad consequences regarding our relationship with foreign country ,in fact today that we have alliances with some countries like Israel or Georgia ,their enemies become our enemy and we become involved in wars or conflict that have nothing to do with us .
George Washington was concerned primarily about two issues, that of foreign affairs and that of the party system developing within the United States. And he would be rightly concerned. 2008 is an election year and one can clearly see how the party system has developed today. There is no doubt that the next president will be a republican or a democrat, no one man has the power, money, resources, etc to do it on their own today and win. Sure independents run and other parties, but what real chance do they get when, as the past shows, they don't get more than one or two percent of all votes.
Washington was concerned that the U.S. would become too involved in foreign affairs, that we would take sides, and favor other countries. Today, more than ever we need to remain neutral and act first in our interest, we should not favor European countries over others and we should weigh fairly what our the best options for our country, not only for today, but in the future as well.
Washington's address would hold up in the way that he talks about things that were currently happening and that is it what most political speeches are centered around. He envisioned an America that was united and was not split by political or personal views. What he wrote can be applied to our foreign affairs today by not favoring our allies, but doing what is best for the American people.
After reading Washington’s Farewell Address, it showed me that no one party or country should ever be favored in any way. Washington’s Farwell Address can be applied to this very day. For instance, he mentioned that by favoring one side, it could potentially cause more trouble than ever expected; and he was correct. Ideally, Washington viewed all the sides of America to be one. He envisioned America’s people to feel united and to be able to put one’s differences aside. Although this may seem impossible to some; however, I think there is always hope. Washington not only helped unify the people, but he also fixed the drift between the North and the South. By having the North, South, East, and West work together, it created a more efficient nation. As a result, I believe that Washington’s Farewell Address ultimately allowed this to hold up till today.
Along with Alisha i do believe that the farewell address did a great job of convincing the people of that time to become one as a nation. At this time the north and the south were doing its thing, as a few people have already said, but this address makes that problem seem very easy to accomplish. Now, comparing this to today's worl i think it strongly fits in with the race issue. Washington said in the address that "Citizens, by birth or choice, of a common country, that country has a right to concentrate your affections. The name of American, which belongs to you in your national capacity, must always exalt the just pride of patriotism more than any appellation derived from local discriminations," this shows that even today we are having problems with unity still. But also we know this problem can be fixed, just like Washington addresses in his farewell address.
After seeing what Washington had set up in his years of being a president, it's obvious that he worked very hard in order to get the North, South, East, and West to work together. This was a strong way to further unite the United States. I understand that there are constantly going to be differences among the people in the states, however, we can't change that. I believe that Washington knew that to be true, as he willingly accepted that people wished to express and have their own personal beliefs and opinions. However, he focused on having the people united, meaning they would work together for the better, or worse. I know we have a lot of problems of racism, and religious factors playing in too. But still today, we are the UNITED States. We are only human, but keep in mind, humans that can put aside their differences to come together when needed. So with that, we obviously still follow what he has put in front of us. There was an effective government set up for the time period then, and I think it is still being carried out today very consistantly, allowing for the efficiency to govern ourselves with little problems. (Of course there will always be problems)
I agree with what Alex from period five saying how it is essential to unify the political parties. Recently, the Democratic and Republican Parties seem to be focusing more on arguing with one another; instead, they should be working together in order to actually get somewhere. Fighting with each other will not accomplish anything, it will only waste what little time we have. Therefore, I believe that we should be a little less stubborn and a little more open minded in order to reach a compromise. As Alex stated, back then, we successfully created separate plans which satisfied all the different parties. Seeing as it worked in the past, perhaps we should try this method to reach an overall agreement with one another.
I very strongly agree with what both Alisha and Austin had to say. He did good as president as to say he thought no party should be favored, with out recognition of the other. He knew it would cause problems, and rightfully addressed, or "warned" the people about it. He believed that there should be patriotism amongst the United States regardless of which political party was dominant at the time being. He also didn't wish for Americans to focus on the foreign affairs, but rather focus be drawn to further persue the "happiness" that came along with being an American, with such freedom we have had over many other countries.
I think that Washington's speech applies today, especially since we are near elections. He envisioned America to be united, but instead it seems we are being divided because of our different opinions. He did not want us to get involved into affairs with other countries, but we did, so now, look where it has landed us.
I believe with what austin lahr is saying. How Washingtons Farewell Address today would fall under the race issue and how different everyone is in today's world. As time goes on, we are slowly getting use to seeing different races and eventually it will be fixed.
Washington also says to beware of the parties. The parties are basically seperating the united states as a nation. We need to be one and act as one to be the great nation Washington set up for us.
I agree with Kyle on the two issues that Washington discussed the most. He definitely emphasized that we need to stear clear of favoring other nations, namely European nations. I think this is accurate and holds true to today. It's best for America to remain neutral. He also discussed unity quite a bit. Washington had the right idea when it came to unity. It's vitally important and it's helped our country grow over the years. Democrat, republican, yeah, but we're all Americans. I disagree with the liberals in every way, but you know we're all Americans, so we have to remain unified. That's what Washington wanted. And not just with political parties, he was concerned about the North and South. I would agree with Austin on the issues that are still dividing the two today. I think his concerns and his speech overall definitely hold up today.
In Washington's Farewell Address, Washington’s talks about how the check and balance is a great system because people have a love for power and the check and balance make sure one branch or person has to much power. Today the checks and balance system is still in use to this day. Also he talks about how the political parties should be eliminated. I believe we need to do away with the parties and people just need to agree on there own opinion and not just do it because there party said so.

I agree with what Ariel has to say as well as Kyle and Austin. If we favor other countries we can make others angry with us because everyone has alliances and everyone has enemies. So if we were to team up with a country and another hated them, they might attack and would find a reason to do so. Today we are basically the world's police and there is no need. Every little scuffle between nations, we are there with some kind of opinion. Washington wanted our nation to be concerned with itself and nothing else. Obviously if we were attacked for what ever reason, we would retaliate. Take Switzerland, it is a neutral country and nobody has attack that nation. They are just concerned about themselves and not what other countries are doing, just the common welfare of its people. I also agree with Ariel that we are all Americans and we need unity. I too do not agree with the Democrats, but we still could use some unity between both parties, just as Washington dreamed of.
I would have to agree with Brandi. I also think people should get rid of these political parties. It is nonsense! People will only vote for a political party without knowing what the person represents. I think it should only be based off their ideas and not there political party. I also agree with ariel washington's farewell adress when it came to the subject of unity was strong. Thats almost all he talked about is how we as americans need to come together.
I strongly agree with Brianna R from period five. For the longest time, the world has always had some sort of problem. However, in order to actually make some progress, we must begin to work together. I understand that everyone has an opinion and are given the right to voice it; nevertheless, it does not excuse the option to corporate with one another. By keeping a closed mind and always slamming one’s ideas down will not accomplish anything. Therefore, I believe that society must begin to recognize everyone’s views.
I think that his Farewell Address would hold up today because he talks about the unity of the country and that is what we are striving for. It also talks about topics that are still valid and current with today's topics such as checks and balances. One of the only things that is not similar with today's topics is that Washington was a strong believer in neutrality and we are definitely not neutral.
i feellike washington knew the united states better than anyone. He said that political parties would tear this apart. he wanted the country to unite for the good of the country. He also wanted us to not make treaties with foreign countries, which definetly doesn't hold up today. In a way today the political parties are hurting us.
As Alexa A. mentioned washington did hint that we should be a neutral country but how is that possible in today's worl? In the position that we are in, if we tried to be neutral that would give other countries a reason to attack. for example, If we bacame neutral china's economy would spiral downward. And he also said that unity is a strong thing, when indeed it is, but will it solve all of the worlds, or America's, problems?
i also think that washingtons speach applies today, mostly because we are near elections. washington knew that the united states would be the best and wanted us to become united but it feels more and more as if we are being divided. he also wanted us to atay out of forein affairs and we didnt listen to that.

Washington’s speech still holds up today, were he is talking about bringing this country together. When together we as a country would be stronger. We need to be aware of the parties; they are basically separating this country. But i don't think we should be a neutral country because it would leave us open for an attack.
Washington's farewell address was brilliant. I believe that he was an extremely great president with great views for our country. What he was saying does not hold up in our government today at all. We are really involved in foreign affairs and the parties are completely divided. Our parties, especially in the upcoming election, rip each other apart. There is barely any unity in our government when it comes to the two different parties. Washington says no parties equals not as many disagreements and division. As far as efficient government at home goes, we have let foreign affairs stand in the way and control a lot of how the government operates.
I believe Washington's Farewell address still holds today, because he had set goals for what he wanted to view his country as. He viewed the states following one government, but unfortunatly it did not happen. He had very strong reasons as to how America should be run, and I truly agree with his perspectives.
Jason is right when he says that our two parties rip each other up during elections causing no unity in our government. However, the amount of citizens in the United States have different thoughts on what they think our society should run as, that we could never become neutral nor follow only one party. That though, is unique part about the United States; having your choice of which three groups you could fit into.
I think that what President Washington would hold up today. He discusses what is going on with the country and why he feels safe leaving it to another man to do his job. I think that Washington thought that the country was going in a good direction, because he says otherwise he would not feel that he did his duty to his country and therefore could not leave if he didn't feel this wat. Washington also talks very honestly about what problems the country may have in the future concerning the union as a whole. I think that this is different than today, because politicians are usually not that honest. I think that what he wrote regarding the country having a lot of the same policies it did then years from now, and the fact that we are still a united free nation applies today.
I agree with what Hufsa says when he writes about Washington having goals. I think that this is a very important trait every president should have, instead of just going into the presidency with none at all.
In my opinion, I believe that Washinton's Farewell Address would hold up quite well today. The way he speaks of checks and balances still syncs up with the way we run our government today. He also seems to talk a lot about the modern issues (modern being quite old back then) of their time. If you notice in today's world, that is exactly what every president or presidential candidate talks about. I think that Washington could esaily make it in our world today thanks to his views.
I agree with Brandi and her views on the political parties. I think that they should be done away with so people will start making decisions based on their views and not just what their party tells them too.
I believe that George Washington's farewell address is very sensible and correct, but it does not seem to hold up too well for today. It seems as if George Washington was a strong supporter of the Constitution, and he liked the ideals of a central government. With that government, there would be less dominative faction, and there would be more checks and balances to control governmental powers. In his speech he also expressed that religion and morals help people develop just and reasonable ideals. He wanted to prevent permanent treaties with other countries, and really emphasized being independent country. He probably hoped that his desires or ideals would be fulfilled or maintained in the future, but as of now, those desires do not seem evident.
Many politicians are Partisan, and they will only vote for their party, despite the issue. This only partisan thinking seems to lead to corruption, foul play, and biased media. Many politicians also seem to have lower moral values, as many politicians are known to have affairs or contribute to unjust activity. This country seems to be in a far place from what George Washington intended.
Jason Z, I strongly agree with you. This election is a very divided. Like many others commented, it only seems as if there are two parties this election, and both of those parties seem very strong in their views. On the national level, it can be difficult to vote for the presidents because there are two, having completely different ideals. There are many ideals too, where people cannot pick and choose. On the state level though, there seem to be more opportunites for to vote on a smaller level, on different issues. I believe it is important that state and federal government remain fairly distinct, like Connor O. stated.
I agree with Jason Z. Washington decided to not to run again because he felt that the country would be okay with another president. In agreement with Jason Z. our elections today focus a lot on foreign affairs. Each party attacks one another, trying to make them look bad. Washington did not want our country to split into two different parties. He wanted one unified government, but today both parties just attack each other. Which makes people attack others from the different party. We need to listen to Washingtons farewell more, because it is focused on unifing our nation.
I think Washington's Farwell Adress doesnt hold up today. in his adress he was really persistant on making sure that we stay out of foreign affairs becaus that will best benifit our country. now days that is not the case we tend to want to help as much as we can even if we aren't wanted. I think Washington wanted America to grow and become a powerful country over time and i believe we have accomplished this. we are now a lot bigger and stronger than we were when Washington was around. So i think we did achieve what he wanted. I think what he wrote can be applied today if we never went into foreign affairs because we thought it was the write thing to do. it seems that we now jump the gun on decisions and this is why some countries dislike us more than other.
I too agree with Jason Z in that we are deeply divided because of the political parties. Both have a common goal but have very different views on how to reach them. I also agree with Hans L. in that the politicians vote for their party even if they disagree with the party's plans, and like he said, this just leads to foul play and corruption.
I agree with Brandi C., just getting rid of the name Republican and Democrat would make people at least somewhat listen to the issues and vote on who they think will make America a better place. In the long run I think it would be better for America.
Washington you could tell was a real genuine person and wanted the best for this country. HE did a good job during his time as president. He was confident that who ever led this country the it would be led right. All of the problems that pertain to that time period are a little different than the problems now in the country. They dont relate. We are stronger and bigger and can do what washington wished and even more. He wanted the government to have more control and each state to have their own independence. He had a good vission but just doesnt fit our country to how it is now.

If washington was still alive to this day, how do you think he would feel towards our modern day government? Washington planned on each state having their own independent government but at the same time unite the states and create a long running strong government. Also I wonder if he understood how large America would grow as quick as it did. I agree with most of the my classmates but a couple i could disagree with.
I believe that the basic ideas of washington would hold up today in that the vision of unity of government is a basic principle everyone wants to achieve and sustain. However some of Washington's warnings would not be used today such as the warning to stay out of permanent alliances with other countries. Although our country stayed without a permanent treaty, the NATO alliance changed that in '49. But overall the main thing that i think washington wanted to get across was that our country needs to stay unified and preserve the republic. He knew that the emerging Republican and Federalist parties were going to play a major role in heading the government and he wanted to make sure that the people learn to stay one nation despite their differing opinions, which is what we are trying to do today, regardless of the fact that the political parties of today are so opposite.
I believe Washington's farewell address holds up today to a certain extent. As far as the wide difference of political views between the Democrats and the Republicans has remained the same and as he invisioned. But, his address regarding foreign affairs has changed drastically because permanent alliances are needed when it comes to nuclear warfare and oil. His writing can be applied today because the political parties have come to agreements and believe the same views in certain categories.
I agree with Raymond Paul. This is becuase with the United States all being one sided and under one opinion, many countries could find plans around the government. Also, if the country sided with democratic views than the military purposes would be different and national security would be less.
I agree with Alex A when he talks about how it is so different today and people are so hateful towards one another when they could be trying for a compromise. As with the VA and NJ plans- both sides had great ideas but they didn't all work so they decided to work together to come up with the best way to please the most people. Unfortunately, today, people on both ends of the political spectrum are so cold and adamant that they have no desire to try and compromise. That is why so many things never get done in the government because nobody wants to agree on anything and the sad thing is that they think that their parties determine who they are in all their decisions and they don't care enough to try and work out something for the greater good of the country.
In my oipion, Washington's Farewell Address could hold up fairly well today. Washington wanted the country to unite, which is definitely something this country needs. Though he had high aspirations for our country, many of these have not been achieved. He, for the most part, wanted unity for the poeple in America. He did not want America to be extremely "divided" or lose their ability to make their own decisions. I would hope that his idea for unity were in effect today, but that seems somewhat unreachable. Although, if everyone worked harder at this, then we may be able to succeed in Washington's ultimate wish for unity.
I agree with Brendan M. when he said that we aren't staying out of foreign affairs. We are definitely not following some of the ideas Washington had for our country.
In Washington's address, he states that he wanted the US to stay together as a whole and to be a strong nation, one that other countries could look at a feel confident that we could help them if they needed. For Washington being the first president, he did an amazing job. A lot of what was used back then is still used today, look at the Constitution, yeah we have made addition but we still use it in every day life.
i agree with ryan on the fact of alliances. i understand Washington wanted to stay neutral for the most part, however alliances must be made in order to get the supplies we need to keep our country running. so now days it is hard to be neutral
I feel in terms of his farewell speech is not effective today. He knew that as soon as he left office party's would ensue. That was inevitable, and it helps the nation define its voice at certain times, and others a new voice rings fourth. One thing we did fail at however is political corruption. Even though it's not as bad now as it was during the Tweed ring era, corruption still runs rampant through out democratic system. Personal gain and shady deals will always happen, even in democracy. To expect other wise is to expect non-human characteristics.
I agree with Brandi C. in her views that the political parties should be elimated. I believe this would cause much less confrontation, and more decicions would be made based on one's opinion, not by the influence that a certain party has on them.
I agree with Caylan on the fact this country needs unity. Washington's dream for this country would have made us an even better nation. But i do not believe we could achieve this anytime in the near future because our country is already divided with political parties and it would be very difficult to change that aspect. Also it would be impossible to become nuetral because there are too many people who want to destroy our freedom. This dream of Washington's is a great idea but the reality is it would never work giving the position the country is in now.
I think Washington's address is still valid today. He talks about the importance of the constitution and its role in everyday life. He also addresses the idea that parties eliminate unity in our government which is a definite issue in our current 2 party system. Many elections and debates become more about which party to vote for and less about the greater good of the country as a whole. Washington specifies the responsibility we possess as citizens to establish our government and to obey the laws and statutes of it. Washington shows the importance of unity, the validity of the Constitution, religion, education, and foreign relations to create a country in which all things are done for the greater good of everyone. Many times this idea gets lost because so many people are unwilling to step outside themselves and do what is best for everyone.
I agree with Nick Y, washington really addresses the issues concerning America even still today and shows how to become a successful nation. He understood the importance of the constitution and its role in our current society. I have to disagree with Tyler H. I find Washington's address relevant today because it is a reminder of what America should be. Even though we may not fit the image of what Washington described as the ideal American society, it does not mean that his address is something we shouldn't strive to achieve. It is relevant just not easily obtained from our current society.

Wow that was a lot of reading. i think the farewell address still holds up today. I think come around every election everyone of the canidates in the running talks about becoming one. and thats what george was talking about, how he wanted to unify.
I agree with caylan about one political party.......
i know that my parents are registered under a party but the last couple of times they have voted on the person who they thought would had the best values and would represent our country the best, instead of going by what party they were registered under
Kayla K. pd 1
Brianna B, stated that "unity of government is a basic principle", I disagree, I think that the unity of the country, is more Washington's point, and something we shoud focus on. That and the maitenance of liberty. He states that liberty is the "main pillar" the government stands on, and can not seem to stress its importance enough.
George Washington was in control of a simpler nation, to a point. The country was smaller, big business is still being invented, however he could still see the effects that partys had on the populace. Right away, the federalists and antifederalists were fighting back and forth on issues, size of gov., creation of treasury etc... However, it was clear how easily it is for the public to take sides, to pick the side that agrees with their views at least part of the time.
Thereafter, the public is more and more likely to vote for that particular party. The partys gain more respect, they have more money, they can advertise more, be heard more,....
Then the partys would be running America and after freeing themselves from the tyranny of a crown, the last thing Washington wanted was for the country to be controlled by a source other than the people.
I agree with Kyle U. on the fact that George Washington was concerned mainly with foreign affairs and the party system that was going to develop in the United States. The two different parties are always the most highly voted during an election even though they tear eachother apart during this time. I think it does cause rifts in our country and community but as Sam says, we should come together and unite ourselves. Washington also said that it was important to stay neutral. Taking sides with other countries would not help us, and even though we have alliances now, I believe he is right and we should remain neutral.
I think Olivia s correct about our country being divided during election time. people get so consumed with the different parties and a lot of people will fight to the death for their party choice. we don't need something like this to seperate people. people should just be friendly about it and have fun with voting
The party system is too ingrained into our country for it to be simply removed. In fact, the party's do try to cater to the entire country, however, sides will be taken, it is impossible to please everyone.
I disagree with Tyler in that I think his speech would be as effectiver today as is was a couple hundred years ago. Washington is advising the country to advoid party systems, to avoid entagling relations with other countries, etc... And I believe that the public and future pres. with listen to him and take that to heart, whether they did anything about it, well did it change anything back then?
Another thing, George Washington believed that we should not have a state sponsored religion, but religion should shape the values of the people.
State-wise, I don't think that today we have nearly as much north vs south or east vs west, etc.. conflict today. The USA is one as a whole, one is going to run into different people in different areas, but people don't loath one side of the country over the other. People will move to one place for jobs, or another place for weather, but I don't think people harbor the idea the this side is so much different than the other.
Zzzzzzzzz,I'm tired. I really shouldn't write these blogs this late, I start to ramble.....
i think geroge washinton was to was worried that the act of having a president was eventualy going to led to a dictatorship. it seemed that he was tired of being president and was ready and willing to step down. But dont get me wrong he was very honored to have served but he just felt his time was done. i think his speech was brillent and would hold up very well in todays government.
I agree with what Chase has to say regarding election time. I just wonder if this sort of thing was something that George Washington thought was going to happen. To him would the parties we have today be a good thing or a bad thing? Other countries throughout the world don't have parties that have such importance like we do.
I agree with Alexa in saying that even though Washington's ideals do not seem evident today, there is still an opportunity to restore what he may have wanted. If there is still an opportunity, people must work hard though. Washington's ideas were amazing, but if the people do not throughly believe and push for what he stood for, it will never happen. People must realize what the most important topics are that make this nation into what it could be. Something like that does not just happen.
I agree with Hans in the fact that Washington's farewell address is very sensible, but it does not hold up as well as he invisioned it would today. It seemed as though Washington wanted there to be less political parties rather than a variety of smaller ones. Today, we recognize the two main political parties, the Democrats and Republicans, and those two parties seem to rip each other apart. I agree with Janet how she says both presidential candidates talk about the parties becoming unified, but in reality we all know that is very unlikely for that to happen. I believe a part of Washington's address that does apply today is how we are so involved in foreign affairs, and that is also part of what he had invisioned for America.
Washingtons farewell adress is very different from the government system we have today. Washington believed in the states acting under one title of government. He also stated that he wanted to stay out of foreign affairs because it will benifit our country. But today it seems like all we want to do is help other countries out even when they refuse and do not need our help. I feel that washington wanted to build america into one of the strongest and biggest nations in the world, which i feel like we have done. His speech also said that we should stay away from political parties and unite as a nation. I feel that washingtons speech can be used by all the presidents today to use as a guide on how the country should be run and what we need to do and what we should not do.
I agree with Alex because he said that liberals and conservatives right about almost everything. I think George Washington would not have liked what is happening with this case, but other than that his veiws and ideas for the future have held up. We are still together as a whole, when were not talking about political parties but north and south wise. I also agree with Alexa becuase she pointed out the fact that Washington thought that the constitution would still be highly followed today. I think its amazing that we have added only a few amendments after all these years and recognizing that and understanding the plans that made it work helps.
I agree with Alex A on what he says about how the parties destroy the unity that our country is supposed to have. I don't think George Washington would be happy too see what is going on in today's world after he tried so hard to do everything right and make everyone happy.
Washington's Farewell Address was a beautiful thought that no long flows through todays government. He wanted a person that would"...to be clothed with that important trust...expression of the public voice..." Not all things that Farewell said have been lost in time, some still stand like foreign affairs. Some words still hold to because today the two parties still must work together for the greater good.

George Washington's speech would have held up very strongly today because he is thanking the American people for choosing him to serve for 8 years and he is being very noble and humble. He is asking the American people to give the same respect that they give him to the next President. President Washington's job was probably the easiest presidency of all because the American people had nothing to compare it to but the English Monarchy. That doesnt mean that his role wasnt important. He was trying to unite Americans together because at the time of his presidency the states acted as their own countries basically. Today much hasnt changed except that the Federal Government controls all of the states with federal laws but during Washington's time the states could make their individual decisions. He wanted Americans to keep his office in high respects and to choose a President for his virtues and what he could do for the country. Much of what he wrote can be applied today but i dont think that anyone really follows his examples. America is very diverse and i still dont tihnk that full acceptence of other cultures and people is prevalent. I dont tihnk Geroge Washington could have seen how many different people would live in the U.S. but i dont think that it would have mattered to him. We are all created equal.
I agree with Ursula, how the states should have there know freedom but should also have a set line that they cannot cross. Also how the government is set up would help unite the people behind it.
I agree with so many of the pepole that commented about unifying political parties, but i dont think that will ever happen. Its like that saying rules are meant to be broke and so is unification. It is meant to be broken. People are not meant to unified. The differences between us are what make us human. I do agree with Alex however that we should take some of both party's ideas and merge them to create some movement in our legislation and decision making.
I agree with Tyler when he said that Washington decided to not run again because he decided that it was time and that the country was ready for another President. Washington set precedents for our current Presidents today. He showed the people of America that he did not want to be like a King instead he wanted to be the servant of the people and he became president to make America happy and to allow them to see that they can have a leader without having them being a dictator or king.
I agree with Alexa B when she states that tghe debates today have become about which party is the best and not about the issues that need to be addressed. I disagree with Tyler H about how everything was going to change when he left office. The speech was about how he wanted America to stay united and strong and i still think with all the things that we have been through we are still staying together.
In Washington's farewell address we see something that Americans can not see in today's society. Washington gave this address as an explanation as to why he is leaving he appeared to seem almost guilty for leaving like he was letting his country down even though he put off his retirement again and again for this country and he was getting far to old to continue he still felt obligated to his country and people don't seem to get that in this day an age. Washington was such a good president because his country always came first even though he really just wanted to climb on top of that hill of his and rest he knew that there was something better he could be doing for his country. All he wanted to do was make his citizens happy and that is exactly what he did but in this era it seems that the candidates are just shooting for what they or there parties want they don't bother to look beyond that and that is why i have been hearing so often that elections have become a picking of the lesser of the two evils. George believed that candidates should be picked by there ability and quality to deal with politics but that dream seems to of drifted away. George Washington was one of the best presidents this country will ever see and we need someone with his heart and bravery to come along or the only direction this country will go is down.
I would also say i agree with Alexa B, about the debates being which party is the best and who address's the issue better. and i would have to say that i don't think things have change a whole lot when he left because his speech was talking about how he wanted us to be united, strong, and free and thinking of what we've gone through we still are all of those. so in that case it hasn't changed.
Washingtons farewell address was his goodbye to us as our nations leaders. Washington felt guilty about stepping down as our leader, although he stayed in long after he desired to retire. Washingtons farewell address stressed many issues and situations our nation does and will face. It talked about foreign affairs. He stressed the importance of unity among the two political parties. Althought Washington was sad to step down, he was growing old and knew it was time for a new leader. Washingtons farewell address was a kind, informative letter that portrayed his passion for our country and his leadership qualities.
I believe that Washington's Farewell Address still holds up to today. George talked about many ambitions such as: that the nation he would not seek office again, the importance of unity, as well as the different political factions within the country. Leading into to topic of foreign countries, stating that there should be no "favorites" because it just causes jealousy. The summed up the farewell by saying that we should remain at peace and to ensure trade and prosperity, the nation has abandoned neutrality and detachment from alliances to embrace diplomatic, economic, and military globalism. These changes profoundly affected American identity, society, and culture in the last half of the twentieth century and will continue to do so in the twenty-first. Which still are talked about during today.
I agree with lindsey that Washingtons farewell address was an informative letter and was meant to be kind. He had passion for the country and all of the people in it and did whatever he had to to keep it going strong.

I agree along with Caylan A.and Brandi C. because they brought up that politcal parties.
I agree with Katie that The Farewell address was saying that if you choose a certain country you are playing favorites.
I think Geroge Washington is cool
I think he is super cool! How ya doin rick?
no you are wrong nick he was super super cool
I'm doing good Nik but i disagree with you i think he is the coolest person ever born next to Mr. Waddell
look that isnt fair we comparing men not gods
I feel that Washingtons speech applies to today because he wanted unity among the people. Back then it was the federalists and the republicans, where today its the republicans and democrats.

I agree with Alex A. The parties should be unified instead of separarte because so many unecessary disputes come up solely based upon party status. Many important decisions and legislation have been put on hold solely becuase party beliefs have divided congress. Many congressman will vote only with their party because they don't want a bad repuatation instead of voting how they feel. The 2 party system has corrupted the vision that the framers of the constitution had in mind.

Wow, I see that Nik and Rick are really trying to excell in this class!
Anyways, I agree with what Katie K. said, that it does hold up today. It isn't necessary for the government in any way to bring upon "favorites". It should just be unity as George Washington had first proposed.
I agree with Alex A and Alexa B. If the parties are separarte instead of unified many unecessary arguements come up because people stick to their party. Alexa also says that some congressman vote on not the way they feel, but on the way that will make them look best. I believe that the counrty is somewhat more divided because of the 2 party system.
Alright so it's interesting how George Washington sperates himself from the people in his speech, and then describes the problems that were going on back then, and how similar they can be applied today. He envisions the American People as a union, which is what the "united" states is renouned for, for being "united". But these issues he talks of still seperates America from being a hundred percent unified. And in the past we have gotten close for moments at a time to be unified, but it never lasts. Its kinda sad but that's the world and America needs to do the best they can to stay unified.
When you look at the speach's people wrote about 200 years ago they are going to be (hopefully) different delimas then we have today. Such as the north and the south, we really dont have that problem as much today. This adress is most likely the basis of how most people feel about affairs.
I agree with T.J. that the speech he gives totally applies today and that we as a people are facing the same issues. If we were'nt then we'd indominable and have no problems because those same issues have been around FOREVER, and its hard for some peoplt to accept their faults so they'd rather keep being the way they are. A little off topic now, but i agree with T.J.
I agree with Shannon P. in that we as America can't favor other countries, or in other words rely on one country solely. We are an independent nation but over the years i think we've slipped and relied on other countries such as China a little bit too much and that potentially could lead to future problems.
I agree with... well, myself and whoever agreed that political parties can definitely do some damage is tearing at this countries unity... however I also agree with Tyler that it is necessary to have opposing parties and conflicting ideas. Not only is it healthy for the nation, but what's the alternative? To be forced into a certain belief? We've seen how well that works. It's healthy to have different views on things, as long as we aren't extremists. I can disagree with a liberal and have a debate, but it doesn't effect my relationship with that person. We don't need anything else ripping apart our relationships, so disagree, but do it in a nice way.
I agree with Marwin,
He spoke of how people are not supposed to be unified. People are so different and have such different views today that it would be near impossible to get them to become one. Although our system does work today, i believe there is alot of corruption.
Kyle: I completely agree with you, your words are wonderfulness :)
Alex: I disagree with what you say about the United States being the "world's police". I don't disagree that we're being referred to as that, but I do disagree that that's a bad thing. Yeah, the US doesn't need to involve itself in every little problem, but sometimes it is necessary for us to be involved. Even if we hadn't been repetitively attacked by terrorists - forcing us into the war on terror - we would have had to do something about the nuclear threats. I believe it's our duty as the strongest nation, and just because we're good people, to ensure the safety of ourselves, and the world. Somebody has to do it, what chance does everyone have if good people do nothing? Like the innocent civilians in Iraq that are getting raped and killed, what chance would they have? And I know exactly what people are going to say, that it isn't our responsibility, but I feel proud of our country for making it our responsibility. For defending the innocent that can't defend themselves. And yeah there's genocides like Darfur that we haven't taken an imminent role in, but we have to start with the countries that threaten and attack us first.
Washington's farewell addresses differ greatly with the government we have today. Washington was a firm believer of neutrality, which is completely forgotten in modern America. George Washington also thought in leaders being chosen on their political values, rather than deciding between the lesser of two evils, which is exactly what presidential elections are in this day and age. the lines between state and federal government are becoming more and more unclear, which I think will eventually lead to a slow and hopeless type of government. Washington thought strongly in a collective of states acting under one title of government, with each state having a lot of freedom and independence
A good majority of washingtons beliefs are not upheld today, however, our foreign policy is much like his, we have stray'd from his invisionment of america. On the other hand, he wasn't the sharpest tool in the shed and upheld leadership positions not for his ingenious ideas but for his people skills. Not to discredit Mr. Washington, but then again, I wouldn't completely trust his judgement today.
I disagree with James P on the issue of the foreign policy because Washington wanted us to be nuetral and we are far from it. I do believe it is almost impossible in this day and age to stay completly nuetral. I do believe his ideas would work in America today however. His fundamental ideas for our country could have made us more united and stronger. But we decided to betray his request for no faction which made us more divided as a country.
I do agree with Alexa B and Alex A, that the parties should be unified, although, that is a very unlikely chance in the United States. Many people have different thoughts and feelings towards what they feel, for example abortion or gay rights. We have become more dependent and since our admendment of freedom of speech, which allows us to speak and feel differently while expressing ourselves,I doubt that our parties would ever become unified.
- George Washington's Address was very strait forward and to the point: to protect from being overrun by Europeans. In the address it's very obvious that he wants a freedom that the people didn't have before, a new unifying [if you will].
- This speech applies today, but feels like more of a dream than an actual success. Throughout history America has struggled with this "unifying" terribly, whether we admit it or not. We probably are the most unified at the moment than we ever have been in history, but I still believe that this address is less of a reality, no matter what age it is meant to apply to.
I agree with Shannon P. that every party should be unified. Like Washington said the nation should be unified and he left it unified. Both parties have different views on different issues, and that is why it is hard to unify every party. Since everyone has the freedom of speech every party will be on its own and never be unified.
I disagree with Tyler S. because with every party being the same there would be little change and could possibly go under a monarchy. It would give one person too much power.
Washington's Farewell Address holds up pretty well today. He wants a country united rather than a country divided. For the most part, our country stands proud together, until election day. On election day we are divided, mainly into two groups. Our country should stand together on every issue and be able to compromise to consider everyone's views.
I believe that the Government Washington wanted has been forgotten. He believed in the separation of church and state and judging canidates by their political values, not their religion. Today, many of the canidates will talk about god and their religion trying to sway more voters to their direction.
I don't not think that it holds up today. He wanted our country to be neutral and alliance free. He felt that by doing so our country would work out in the best way possible. I think he wanted to have a strong, central nation, free of conflict. What can be written is that we were free of war and conflict during this period.
I agree with Connor O. The line between state and federal has become much more blurred since George washingtons time. I also agree with that this may lead to the government becoming more ineffective.
Why does Chuck Norris drive an ice cream truck covered with skulls? I want to get ice cream from an ice cream truck not a frozen head. Chuck Norris is a jerk for stealing all the ice cream.
I agree with Jason Z., he was right in not running again. Besides, he wouldn't be around forever, so someone else should learn the role of President and the next after him. Now days it seems like all the President is about is war, and it isn't good. And like he said, instead of having one big Congressional party, there are two seperate parties that only seem to attack each other, instead of worrying about the country.
I agree with Brendan M and Austin Lahr. Washington wanted us to unite as a nation and stay out of foreign affairs, but we're not doing that.
I think that his address would hold up today, although there would be some flaws. He invisioned a country that could be united together as one, in wich we are doing for the most part today. Washington did want us to be conflict free, in which we are not doing today. We are involved in foreign problems, and this is what he wouldnt want us to be doing. He beleived that we could stand together stronger if we were nuetral and out of the world's problems.
I agree with Ryan Kordys where he says that we are only somewhat united in todays society. Again Ryan makes a valid point because Washington did want us to be a neutral conflict free country. Eliminating these factors would make the current America the America that the founding fathers envisioned for our country.
How does Washington's Farewell Address hold up today? What did he envision for America? How can what he wrote be applied today?
Washington's Farewell Address does not hold up today. The main posistion he held was that we do not interfere with international affairs. Now-a-days we are the big bad guys on the playground that watch over everyone and if anygthing goes down we have to be apart of it. This just complicates things and keeps us from focusing on the issues we have at home. Washington invisioned a country where we were all distributed an equal amount of freedom and everyone loved their brother. In history we have had our ups and downs but still have not been able obtain Washington's vision. If we were to stay out of everyone's business and take care of ourselves i think that we would be better off.
In George Washington's farewell address, he warned the country of many things he thought would ba bad for the country but we ended up doing exactly what he said not to. When it comes to alliances with other countries, Washington gave a legitimate reason to stay away, however, with wars and terrorists in today's world, it can be imperative to have other countries willing to defend you against extremists. When it comes to political parti
